WordPress biggest goal is to be a fully customizable CMS. Thanks to its open source coding any programmer with skills to do it can make what he wants with a WP installation.

But if you're reading this you probably have no idea about what is WordPress. So let's start from the beginning.

¿What is WordPress?

WordPress is what's called a Content Manager System (CMS). As it names suggest, it's a software system that facilitates publishing content on Internet.

If you want to launch a blog or any kind of website by your own, you must make the software from scratch. You will need advanced programming skills for that, and some other knowledge such as web design, server management and many more tech abilities.

With WP you don't need to know nothing of that. You just have to install WordPress in a server and connect your domain with it. And that's all you'll need to start publishing contents and spread them all over the web.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about when saying "server" and "domain" don't worry. Its nothing complex to understand and we will take a look on that in next posts.

All you need to know now is that WordPress is just a bunch of files with codes in them, created by a large community of professional programmers that after many years of hard work have result in a outstanding software that accomplish more than satisfactory the objective of a CMS.

¿What can be done with WordPress?

I will answer that question with another question: ¿What can YOU do with WordPress? the real thing is that if you have the appropriate know-how knowledge you can do whatever you want with WP. Of course, there may be some cases were it’s not the best option.

There are all kind of Websites made with WP. Blogs are the most numerous and that’s obviously because WP is precisely made for that, remember what CMS means.

But there are also many other kind of websites out there made with WP. E-Commerce, directories, social networks, online radios, podcasts, corporate websites, digital newspapers, affiliate websites and much more.

WP is an open project. That means its code is public, there is no hidden files. All built in mechanism and methods that makes WP works are open. In easy words. Anyone can get into the programming codes and change it at will. And the best of all is that it’s free.

So if you can change coding or add your own codes, anything can be made with WordPress. Of course that you’ll have to learn some basic programming languages like PHP, HTML and CSS at first place.
